Design social listening research before choosing a tool
Start with the population, source boundary and coding decision.

Define the research question, permitted source boundary and coding rules before selecting a social listening tool.

For researchers, insight teams and editors studying public conversation with explicit inclusion rules, human review and privacy safeguards.
The launch guide offers a protocol and codebook structure. All example records are abstract and synthetic; no public material was collected or coded.
Begin with a bounded research question and a decision owner. Declare permitted sources, dates, languages, inclusion and exclusion rules before evaluating tools. Version the query and codebook, retain an uncertain state, and independently review a declared subset. Publish only aggregate or redacted material that passes the rights and privacy release check.
Public conversation is not the whole consumer population. Retrieval can be incomplete, automated labels can miss context and visible posts may still raise privacy or ethical concerns.
